Canoo Automotive's Market

Canoo logo
Well that was short lived, as EVelozcity changes its name and format to become the first only subscription car company.  So say hello to Canoo and their new product which goes by the same name.
EVelozcity may never had made a true name for themselves in the world of green automobiles, but now it seems that they are on the path least taken.   With the rise of autonomous vehicles, it was just a matter of time before someone decided to grace our roads with a subscription only vehicle.  And who is the main target for this company.  Well unlike Lynk & Co., Canoo is primarily going after those famous grey area cab drivers.  Yes we are talking about Uber and Lyft.

This may come as a surprise to some as both companies have been trying out their own fleet of autonomous vehicles lately and a product like this seem fitting for their business model.  Like Tesla, both companies were looking at direct sales which would help boost their bottom line.  But with the arrival of Canoo we think this might shake a few things up in the ride hailing field.

As the Canoo Ev is primarily designed with transportation in mind,  it seems to have the perfect setup to both a ride hailing service vehicle and personal transportation device.  And with the addition of the subscription service, this vehicle becomes more inviting to a younger generation.  This could also be an achilles heel, as subscription only might scare away some of the crowd who wants to own their vehicle outright.  But again who would really want to own a party vehicle and have maintain it.

This is where the Uber effect comes into play as being subscription only this vehicle is more like being your own sub-contractor taxi drive.  Where the company pays for your maintenance and all you have to do is pay a monthly fee to use their product.  So when you consider those options you know have the perfect vehicle for transporting people along with a service system to back you up.  That makes the Canoo the perfect vehicle for the ride hailing industry.  But don't tell them that.

Outside the Canoo doesn't really look all that great, inviting, but not something that you would want to drive to mall to do groceries in.  Even with a famous designer behind it, the exterior of this product could have used a bit more to make look more like a vehicle and less like a computer mouse.  This is a design we would expect from Apple Corp., not an actual auto company.

But there a few subtle design ques worth looking at, as the lights are futuristic and the rims are very familiar.  Oh wait we saw those on the Model 3.  But something else seem familiar about this product as well.  Could it be that it resembles the Tartan Prancer from the "Vacation" movie from 2015.  That could be it as it does look vaguely like it.

With space maximized to great distances, the Canoo is sure to be a hit with ride hailing and even taxi companies alike.  Considering that you have easy access inside via large suicide doors, this might just be the perfect party and transportation vehicle.  Add to that an interior which is free from center driveshafts and seats and you have a true king when it comes to mobile transportation.

The front is inviting for the driver as well, as it looks to a future free from dashboards and bulky steering wheels.  Of course that could be because this is just a concept for now and the production model may differ from what we see here.  In the back the you will find enough space for you and all of the guests and it even has a spare seat built into the door so that you can maximize the entire rear seating space.  This could be good for personal transportation, but may pose a problem when it comes to running a ride hailing service.

One thing we are looking forward to seeing from the Canoo would be this product being used for the limo marketplace.  And like the large party buses you see out and about, this could also house a party (aka stripper) pole in the centre for all your party needs.  And lets not forget all that space for a mini bar and snack table.

The Canoo EV may just be the right product in the right time, as some consumers are starting to move away from car ownership.  Subscription service and a massive amount of interior space might just be what the doctor ordered for this generation.
