BYD was correct in wanting to enter the van ring. But when you use the simplest design formula which has been overused over the years, you are bound to blend into an already saturated marketplace. Too bad BYD didn't utilize any of their formula's from the rest of the lineup for this van, as they would have had a different outcome. |
Li-Auto is already known for their basic designs, but when the Mega took the stage earlier this year, we all thought it was a joke. But this is no joke and like the Cybertruck did a few years back, this is the all new van from Li-Auto and this is how it is going to look. Guess your kids can get jobs designing cars now. |
Nissan may be in a heap of trouble these days, and it seems that they think simple designs will get them out of the hole they are stuck in. Simple may make it faster to hit the market, but in the end no one will notice you in a crowd as standing out is more beneficial. Hopefully Honda can save them being buried in the hole they got themselves into. |
Rivian has made a name for themselves in the global automotive marketplace by besting the competition. Too bad they decided to use this winning formula on the R2, as the simple design from the R1 has just been downsized. It could work in their favour, but too many cookies on the shelf will lead to confusion. |
The 80's were a different time and as we evolved out of this glut of basic designs we learned how to better ourselves. Guess no one told the designers at Rivian, as the new R3 follows a similar design formula that Lancia followed in the 80's. But hey when retro is all the craze, are they wrong to follow the trend? |
Smart has new owners as Geely takes the reins away from Mercedes. This is a good thing for the brand which is need of more products. But lets put a bit more work into separating this brand out from the crowd, as it built the world of new age city cars. Guess the city aspect is still here, but maybe a bit more from suburban life could benefit the update. |
Can you make one of the most basic full size CUV's even more basic. Sure steel wheels and a lack of character are one way. But when you remove all of the standard character lines, accents and even the grille, you can really bring a product into the realm of basics. That is what VW did when they made the Teramont. |

About
AutoLooks "RATED" is where we rate and review vehicles from around the world from every segment of the automotive industry. Our 1,215 point system is based on Four (4) key areas of automotive design.
AutoLooks rates the Front End, Rear End, Side and Overall Appeal of each and every new vehicle from around the world.
If they rate above 75%, they receive our A+ AWARD for design excellence.
If our rating system turns up a score below 45%, then that model will receive our RUSTY AWARD of design failure.
And don't think of borrowing to many design features from another company, or you will wind up taking home our COPYCAT AWARD. This award outlines which model they are borrowing from and how close they are to the original
At the end of each year, AutoLooks puts together all of the their information into one easy to read article which outlines the best, worst, lost and new products from each year.
So join us on our journey of automotive criticism and take a look on our RATED pages to see how well each company, segment and model fair against their rivals.
