2025 Rusty Awards

and the 2025 rusty award goes to.....

2025 Rusty Awards
Simple may be the answer to getting a product to market quicker, but when you entire lineup is made up of this formula, it may be time to rethink your strategy.   This years winner is not only a winner when it comes to bad designs, but an overall company who can't make good design decisions.  But when it comes to changing the way they play the game, will they be able to do it?
2024 was a year of despair, as the bottom of the list grew by 28% compared to 2023.  Hopefully this is not a sign of things to come as the market consolidates.   With the downfall of many markets and overall sales tapering off, this could be a sign of what is to come, but can we let our designs take the brunt of this fall?  Let's hope not.
Last time we saw a drop like this, was when the global market was in a tailspin and companies were looking to stay in the game.  Is that what we are at again, as our automotive designs are being moved aside to ensure new products can arrive quicker?        This may seem like the truth, but the overall truth is more akin to what happened during out last major design drop.  The 1980's.  Back then technology was changing and new safety standards were arriving.  This meant that design had to be sacrificed to help pour more financing into better safety features and fuel economy ratings.  Within a decade we managed to figure things out and during the 90's our designs were looking better.
Is this what is happening today though?  Yes, it is, as we are making a global shift away from I.C.E. power-sources, in a move to decarbonize our world.  As more countries put more emphasis on lower emissions, our research dollars will be spent more on new technology to bring it down.  And with that our emphasis on design will take a back seat as we look for ways to lower our emissions through cleaner designs.  Ever wonder why there are more egg shaped cars on the road.  This is why.
Although a change has been made in our expenses within the research lab, that is still no reason for the 28% increase in bad designs.  With what we learned through the teardrop days of the 90's, we should be better to handle what we need to do to keep our designs cutting edge.  But that would be true, only if the industry wasn't in a downward spiral, with more mergers and acquisitions around.

If you thought the merger between PSA and FCA was the last major merger, then think again.  With more mergers to come in the near future, our designs may be in a stalled generation again as we wait for this cloud in the industry to blow over.  Let's just hope it doesn't take a decade, like it did last time.

2025 AUTOLOOKS RUSTY AWARD WINNER!
Making it onto the Rusty list is bad enough.  But when your entire lineup winds up joining you there, its another thing altogether.  Cenntro Automotive has never been a game changer in the world of design, but they have been around long enough to make some sort of profit which they could dump back into the design studio.  Of course, when you studio still follows the same rules as before, then maybe you have some internal issues you need to work on.

This years winner was not a hard choice, as all of its siblings are on this list as well.  With the most basic lineup in the world Cenntro seemed determined to win this years Rusty Award and the basic 200 was the one which did it best.......or worst for numbers.

With one of the most basic designs you could use for a chassis van design, Cenntro has made no effort in thinking outside of the box when it came to the design of its bread and butter market product.  The 200 may seem better than its larger 300 sibling, but when you boil it down, its influence from the early 90's, really makes this design fall further down the charts.  At least the 300 looks the part of the 21st century.

Overall the Logistar 200 Chassis is as simple as you can get within the van marketplace.  And with its cookie cutter shape, past influence and basic features, it was no wonder that this product would win this years Rusty.  Congratulations Cenntro, as you have proved to us that simple may be what it takes to win the day.  Or lose the day in this matter.

    About

AutoLooks "RATED" is where we rate and review vehicles from around the world from every segment of the automotive industry.  Our 1,215 point system is based on Four (4) key areas of automotive design.
AutoLooks rates the Front End, Rear End, Side and Overall Appeal of each and every new vehicle from around the world.
If they rate above 75%, they receive our
    A+ AWARD for design excellence.
If our rating system turns up a score below 45%, then that model will receive our RUSTY AWARD of design failure.
And don't think of borrowing to many design features from another company, or you will wind up taking home our COPYCAT AWARD.  This award outlines which model they are borrowing from and how close they are to the original
At the end of each year, AutoLooks puts together all of the their information into one easy to read article which outlines the best, worst, lost and new products from each year.
So join us on our journey of automotive criticism and take a look on our RATED pages to see how well each company, segment and model fair against their rivals.
