2024 Alpha Motors REX - dESIGN rEVIEW
little SUV has what it takes to run with the crowd. A 3,000lb towing capacity helps this little off roader bring your camping trailer to those back woods locations you wanted to hit up this summer. Added to that the REX also offers the standard oversized tubular bumper, complete with skid plate, to aid in adventures through the woods. All you need to do now is add on a winch. As a roof rack and lights are available. As with the Wolf, the front of the REX model is rater tame and bland. Circular lights give you that old school feeling. Along with this feeling, comes the wonder of how you could not add any character features to a front. Without any character lines or cowling, the hood of the Rex is a vast expanse of nothingness. A simplified grille and bumper add on to the basic front end which is all Alpha products. Black casing encompasses the entirety of the front grille, which begs to question, where is the accents. Without any variation in this feature, it is hard to tell where the lights and logos begin and end. This is no truer than on the front bumper, where the fog lights disappear into the bumper. This is rather a cool effect, but can make you only see a dark expanse at the bottom. Without the push bar and skid plate ad jutting from the front, the main bumper would hardly be noticeable. Sliding down the side of this vehicle, you will find yourself questioning why there are no key features here. No accents, character lines or intakes, brake up the vast emptiness which is the side profile. The only feature which makes you see something different, are the window screws. These screws add on a rather cheap factor to this product, making us wonder if these were added at the last minute, or just made to be easily replaced. We can note that the tire and rim choice was made to be the best choice out here. Billet style rims will help keep the mud out and add in a cool factor which some of the competition does not have. All of this is covered by a rather standard looking wheel well, which is need of some better integration. Utilizing aftermarket plastic covers with screw holes, would help blend in better with the top and add to the easy to repair factor this model provides us. Out back is where you will find some of the most detailed areas of this product. From a pressed name in the spare tire to the protruding tail lights, the rear makes more of a statement then the rest of this vehicle. That is not saying much about the rear though, as the lights blend into the black paint. That could be because they are made of red smoked plastic. This is cool, but the design could have been better, rather than the standard circle you would see in the 70’s and 80’s. Again, Alpha has used a tubular bumper overtop of the standard integrated bumper nose. This does add a touch of ruggedness to the rear, but could have been executed a lot better. Maybe a good downsize could help or angle the corners out. A lack of a rear company logo makes it hard to know who makes this product, its name is large enough for everyone to see. One the best aspects of the rear, is the fact that the reflectors are well integrated into the bumper, taking them out of our line of sight. All around the REX is what you would expect form Alpha Motors when it comes to making an SUV. Simple, but useful is what they are all about and it really shows through with the REX. A few more character touches could help bring this product out of the basic world it lives in and help it achieve more than what it already can. Let’s push for a better looking tomorrow in the hopes that Alpha motors will stick around a bit longer. COMPETITION:
