The world of luxury minivans is growing so it comes as no surprise to us when another company from China releases a new one.  This time around its Hycan’s turn, as they release the V09 into the premium category to compete with the likes of Buick and Toyota.  Similar to most Chinese products, the V09 does take some styling lessons from its counterparts from across the East China Sea.  Does this surprise us?  Not Really.

Hycan may be a new name to the Chinese marketplace, but they are more serious than most of the other up and coming brands.  Unlike the ones who
promise but never follow through, Hycan is moving forward with the growth plan and for them that means entering the vital van market, which we know is big money in China.

We still can’t see why people in Asian markets are so into vans, but I guess back in the late 70’s, they all thought the same about us with our custom cargo vans.  Ah well, at least this market is alive and we can expect to see some better-looking vans on the road.  As with most vans, the minivan market is growing in China, and the designs are getting better.

Up front Hycan has decided to go with a boxed in look for its overall appeal.  Oversized gills have been fitted with a chrome exterior accent which protrudes from the front giving an enclosed look and feel.  The gills in question do ride up to the bottom of the very thin light fixture, which gives off that Alice Cooper vibe to the eyes which you gaze upon.  Great feature, but rather large for what its not used for.

The accent strip runs all the way to the bottom where it then becomes the front splitter.  This is a nice touch as it utilizes an existing feature.  One issue with this space, is that it brings the lower portion of the front bumper out.  Its nice to have protection, but not that much.

Along the side Hycan has extended their use of oversized chrome accents, with the lower door sill being the target this time.  Here they tried to add in some sport appeal with a front cut adjusting from bottom.  This feature would have been better if they had included a brake exit port into its design.  As of now it’s just an oversized piece of chrome.

Similar to most Honda’s, Hycan has done away with any form of character.  With a lack of character lines and any form of body movement, the side of this van is as plain as it can get.  Try adding a break line to the side to help improve my vision from the vase expanse of the white sea.

Hycan did do a nice job with both their window trim and handle layout.  Blending in nicely with their space and giving that added touch of luxury is a well executed plan.  This is almost true for the rims, as a bit more chrome could have helped you notice that this vehicle rides on tires, not a curtain of air.

Hycan V09 side
Slipping past the bland side profile, you find yourself looking at the multiverse.  Out back there are three (3) separate universes as the lights break the window from the lower rear.  As the lights sit out from the rear of the vehicle, it makes them appear to be floating on the rear and about to fall off.  Don’t worry, as they are fixed to the vehicle and Hycan has even gone far enough to darken the lights to try to make them blend in with the window. Wrong execution Hycan.

We have to say that they did add a properly sized rear wing to the V09, as most vans only have a basic body molded wing, not a flying wing.  This is complimented by a proper placement of the rear light.

A bit lower you will find yourself lost in a sea of nothing again.  Here the only thing which breaks you vision, is the lower splitter plate which has fun from the front.  This splitter adds on some much-needed sport appeal, but is not enough to save the V09 from emptiness.

Again, Hycan has gone with a boxed in look, this time with the reflectors running up the side walls flattening them out.  This does add character to rear, which could be used on the side profile more than the rear.  Let’s hope they move this character to the side on refresh.
Hycan V09 rear
Overall, the V09 does have some sporting appeal mixed with a taste from the premium market.  A bit more character is required for this vehicle to move up in the world.  Along with that they could reduce the number of boxes they used to make this profile and bring in some more smooth corners.  Boxed designs are a thing of the 80’s and that’s where they should stay.
