Small Roadster - Sports / GT With 25 years under its belt as being the best selling roadster of all time, it would just be fitting that an update was due. After four generations and record breaking sales, it was time for Mazda to take the little Miata (MX-5) to next level. With a major name change last generation, a major overhaul was the only bigger thing Mazda could do. Up front Mazda has dropped everything from the last model, literally. A drop in the hood elevation along with the demise of the bubble lights has made this cute little roadster into a little demon on wheels. All of the new features are just screaming out for attention, as no one will mistake this Miata (MX-5) for a cute car. The one downside is the over sized largemouth bass grille. This could have been reduced, or at least flipped the other way to reduce the mouth appeal. Out back is where Mazda made most of their mistakes. Even with new rear air ducts and a proper license plate indent, the rear end is still in need more work. A still upper lip of a rear bumper, fish eye tail lights and a lack of deck lid spoiler, make this rear all too unattractive. I guess this would be the butter face side of this car. Next time Mazda needs to think more of what was done up front, and bring it to the rear. Along the side you may find all to small and bland wheels along with an all too plain surface. This is some what sharpened by the lower skirt kit, but this enhancement is still far from saving the entire side. Of course when you see how low the wheel wells make this ride look, you might overlook these issues. Overall the new Miata (MX-5) is a major step in the right direction even if it has a few quirks which still need some work. Next time Mazda should add a few more chrome features and some harder edges to move this little model a bit further up the luxury food chain. When you think about where this model came from, and where it is now, it is hard not to love it. Even if it is a favourite ride of your girlfriend or wife. Everett J.
