2024 Ford Explorer Elettrica - Design Review
the rise of the ALV market, Ford may want to consider bringing this alternative to more markets, sooner than later. As NIO and Xpeng are starting to move out, the Explorer EV may be what the Blue oval needs to hold onto their winning CUV crowd. Let’s just hope they realize this before these two companies enter the N.A. marketplace. With an overall wide stance, this new age Explorer may be just what the market needs right now. As we are starting to notice that a wide stance with some good street presence is what the market is hungry for now. Ford could be onto something with this appealing product which seems to scream, “aftermarket, please”. Tuners are going to have a field day with this low slung, wide stance vehicle, which will appeal to the street cruising marketplace, in a big way. A wide stance may be good for its overall appeal, but up front it does pose some issues. Most key features seem to be a bit too wide and could use some break lines. A front grille would help with this, but with this being an EV, a flat bland canvas where a grille would be is what we get instead. Adding a bit more to overall front to help break up the empty voids here, is a main issue which needs to be resolved on the refresh. Sitting at the bottom end of the front, you will find that Ford did take a bit more time to ensure that the battery cooling intake was well thought out. Inclusive of side gills, accent lip and direct intake, this space is well suited to this front. We really can’t ask for much more, except to increase its size of the size of accents to make use of the overly excessive empty void which sits atop of it. Ford did do one handsome job with the integration of the head lamps, as they do blend well with the entire front. Inset to a point which gives you the illusion that they are 3D, these lights may seem like a basic design, but their follow through is impeccable. This is followed by everyone knowing which product it is, as Ford embosses the accent strip with the products name. A great feature which flows with the crease lines from the hood. Too bad there’s not much more up there to look at. Slipping over the sweeping front wind screen, you find yourself floating in mid-air. This could be due to the floating roof which is little less floating than it should be. The C-pillar is inclusive of on an odd accent space, as it appears to stand out from the rest of the side. Doing away with the standard black trim, Ford has added what looks like a broken pillar. This helps to break up the side profile and make the pillar stand out, but with a lower rear window, this space makes the rear look more like that of the Bronco Sport. Dual spaces. Clean lines take you easily from end to end all without any true character lines. This may seem to be a bit off, but the clean lines do work with this model which is in no need of any extra character. With only the wheel arches to break up the sheet metal, the side profile is a clean breath of fresh air, unlike standing next to the its counterparts tail end. One thing we would like to ask for with this model, is that Ford update their rim choice. Although the rims are well designed and different from what you would expect. A little more open space could help them stand out more and add on to the overall sport appeal. Out back Ford has added enough character features to ensure you never get bored. Of course, this is not always a good thing, as their use of cheap flat plastic and plain aluminum are not a good combination. The flat plastic hides the reflectors and the aluminum accent strip looks more like an add on. More body colour here would have helped out. Similar to the front, the tail lights are well blended and again come off with a 3D look. The only major difference here, is that they are 3D. Well in some sorts they are. The smoked appeal is a great add on, but their overall design layout could be improved upon. And yes, again we all know what this is, as the same embossed strip resides here as well. The main area required for an update, would reside on top, as the rear spoiler is not at all fitting. It does move with the design, but that is if this were the Bronco Sport, which this rear end seems to have borrowed aspects from. A more defined rear spoiler would be the final touch required to make this rear a true sport rear. Overall, the Explorer EV is well laid out, with features which flow very well. We could ask for a little less of the Bronco Sport on the rear, as it seems to have been merged with a base model Explorer. Let’s try to keep the two separated from each other, as the Sport is rather stubby and this EV wants to be sporty. Everett J. #autolooks COMPETITION:
