2024 Ford Mustang - Design Review
both Dodge and Chevrolet putting their products out to pasture, Ford has decided to keep the Mustang going until a future changeover can be confirmed. This is good news for us, as we won’t have to black out some of the Mustangs history, like the Challenger and Camaro. 2024 is not the first time this layout for the Mustang has been refreshed, but even without a full overhaul, we think this layout will work. Hardened edges and sloping front end are a few of the updates to this model. Ford has brought down the snout appearance of the front by sloping the hood line further down the front grille. This has been done with an upper accent clip made to blend into the material of the hood. Accented lower you will find a splitter sitting inside of the grille. This is used to complement the upper accent and move air toward the lower portion of the fan. A bit lower Ford has updated the lower intakes with the gills being downsized to include an upper eyebrow. This gives us the illusion of extra downforce, but only is used to direct airflow down into the front gill. Extending the gill upwards would give the front a more menacing look, as larger intakes make It look like it has more power. Don’t mess with me attitude. Just below this Ford has added on a front spoiler which in our world would have been made of carbon fiber, or dressed to look like it. Body color is not its strong suit, as it looks like an add on after the fact design feature. Let’s just make it look cool, ok Ford. The one thing they did improve on was the logo and lights. Opting for band style lighting, this Mustang creates a partially closed eye starring at you effect. This would be perfect, it not for the oversized running lights just above them. As for the logo, bronze is a nice color and it helps bring out the logo from the grille. Not to bring as with chrome and not to dark. Its just right. AS with most standard Mustangs, the side doesn’t have much to offer us. Hard edges mixed with clean lines is pretty standard from this model. But with a large void of emptiness, you would expect Ford to do something about it. Maybe add back on the side air intake and updated as a rear brake duct port. Along with a front one, the side of the Mustang could be made to be even better. But when you are the only one still around, maybe you don’t need to change. One thing Ford did improve upon, was the lower side spoiler. An improvement in material choice could help this area look better, but overall, the look and appearance give the mustang a lower and sporty look. And it does help keep the car on the road, but that won’t help with the sliding car meet customers. Yet again Ford has gone with the tri-fecta of rear tail lights and given that this layout is back, the pulsating light will surely be included. Ford has updated the lights with a black accent, which will add to the lights at night, but during the day, this accent comes off a bit cheap. Just above this sits the rear lip spoiler, something which a lot of vehicles are now utilizing. The difference with the Mustangs, is that it flows off of the rear. A sweeping profile, gives the rear spoiler a look all of its own. This gives it its own appeal and takes away from that add on appeal of the previous add on lip spoiler and the standard sedan tail. Along with the look, it also compliments the tail lights. Riding on the bottom of the rear you will find yourself gazing upon the rear exhaust ports. These are a nice touch and have been added on in a great spot, but for a muscle car, they should be bigger. Surrounding this space is a nicely laid out bumper diffuser crossover. Integrated the reflectors into this area, Ford has made a great choice with the indentation, but could have reduced the size of the central reflector. We just hope that they improve on the material choice for the aftermarket versions. The overall appeal of the new Mustang helps bring this model more in line with the sports cars of today. Blending both hard edges and smooth curves to create the last surviving muscle car has been done well. We just ask for some more character to its side profile and some changes to their material choices. Some of these do bring down the overall value and appeal of this product. All around the updated Mustang is a welcome change, but is it enough to ensure the survival of the only surviving muscle car. Only time will tell, as we move into an electrified future.
