2024 Polestar 4 - Design Rating
From their initial release of the 1, Polestar has been redefining the way we see EV’s. Although their initial product was only a hybrid, it did hit a part of the market which no one ever expected someone to start out in. Coupes are not what many of us think of anymore and launching a company with one is risky. But it seems that Polestar has managed to do it and today, the One is seen as a segment leading hybrid for its marketplace and a vehicle which keeps on surprising us. Today Polestar is well on their way into the luxury marketplace with the release of their follow up products the 2 and 3. The 3 is a product which just seem to fit with the way the market is going now, as CUV’s are the big thing. But a trekking style sedan is a bit off and seems like it was trying to hit on both the sedan and CUV markets. This is a good way to confuse the masses, but for us, it was just a bit off. For their next product, they have decided to go down a different avenue. This time taking their sedan to the saloon marketplace and almost making it so that it hits the ALV market. Making it a true ALV would have been a bit better, due to the increased demand within this market. But as their next product, the 5 will move fully into the luxury saloon marketplace, maybe it just fitting to get in on the ground level now, before the competition arrives. Up front you will find the standard face we have come to expect from Polestar. Split headlamps, a slightly characterized hood, and a complete lack of a front grille inclusive of a properly sized logo. But they did add on a side gill just under the lower running lights, which adds onto the look of the headlamp layout. One thing Polestar has taken a bit of extra effort to add on this time is a more proper front splitter. Riding just under the protruding bumper intake, the lower front splitter compliments this design with a small bit of sport appeal. Not enough to make it a true BMW competitor, but just enough to draw your eyes away from the oversized plastic bumper. Protruding from the front, the bumper is one thing which Polestar really got wrong. Flat plastic is great at hiding scratches from dings at your local grocery store parking lot, but did they have to make it so big. On top of that, only the lower splitter has been accented, where as a proper accent line on the bumper would have helped break up the expanse of cheap plastic. You must hand it to a company who can utilize the profile of their parent without making themselves look like a cheap copy. With a basic Volvo outline, Polestar has gone a step further in to the evolution of this great brand. Moving away from a lackluster and uncharacterized side, Polestar has added key character features to help spruce up the look of the side profile of its products. As with Volvo, Polestar has moved the front protection onto the side profile. This does help with slight damage you may incur in parking lots, but it does overextend the lower lines. Adding a double feature to the side sill, the protection plastic sills are complimented by the front splitter moving onto the side as a ground effects kit. This may have been a cool feature in the 80’s, but its 2023, and times have changed. Being that this is a car of the future, we are not surprised to find side cameras. These have been well integrated into the side profile and even seem to compliment the side mirrors, acting as an extra safety feature. One thing which Polestar has brought from their past, are the oversized and in your face sporting rims. Complete with lower profile tires, this combination sites beautifully within a well rounded well, which leaves little room in the cat hole. Maybe Polestar want to save a few cats or they are just trying to add some sport appeal back into their portfolio. Whatever the reason, we love the layout. Out back is where you will find the oddest feature on this vehicle. Like most ALV’s and CUV’s, the 4 features a panoramic roof. But when it ends, that is it, as there is not back window. In its place Polestar has added on a window plate, which gives us the appearance of a rear window. That is all that is back there, as most of us would think that it is a colour glass panel which works as a one-way mirror surface. But no, there is no back window. Next to a lack of arear window, the Polestar has carried on with their inclusion of the front bumper cladding. Moving from the front to the side and onto the rear, the bumper again utilizes the same oversized, flat plastic as the front. The only difference is that this time it blends better. Oh, and this time it includes rear exhaust gills, which help the rear wheels breath a bit better. Although they are a nice touch, they still could have used a better accent material. Polestar has given the rear one great feature with their 3D style tail lamps, which help to break up the rear. With both an upper and lower indent, the rear of the 4 is far from being a vast expanse of boringness, which is what we cannot say about their parent. Hopefully next time they add the logo to the rear light fixture, as a minor fender bender will knock that market off in a second. Overall, both Geely and Polestar have done a wonderful job in creating a new entry into the ALV marketplace. Following similar lines to the rest of the lineup, the 4 fits nicely within the market will help Polestar grow their consumer base. We all just hope that the 1 is not a one time show and that it’s followed up with a coupe version of the 4 as its next counterpart. Everett J. #autolooks COMPETITION:
