Active Sports Cars are not a new category within the automotive world.  The name be, but the vehicles are not, as ASC's can date themselves back to the early seventies.  Back then four wheel drive and even all wheel drive cars, were nearly unheard of.  But with the rise of the World Rally Championship (WRC), there became more interest in going off road in cars.

Sports Cars

If you really want to get technical, then the first two door cars would have been the earliest ASC's out there.  But back then 4WD and AWD was not a common term or even feature in everyday vehicles.

With the emergence of the Lancia Stratos in WRC, the interest into 4WD cars started.  From that model we soon saw vehicles like the Audi Quattro, Porsche Safari and Subaru WRX.  This interest would soon slip to sedans, but not for everyone.

Active Lifestyle Vehicle

By the late 2000's interest seemed to be increasing due to concepts.  But when the Rally Fighter from Local Motors showed up, the world ASC world changed.  Today many companies are looking back into this market as a way to get sports cars into emerging markets.

For now the interest seems to be there, but how far will it go?  Listen to the podcast to find out more.
